The biggest issue, is the fact that Sega isn’t offering any sort of upgrade path for Switch 1 owners, meaning you’ve no choice but to pay full price for the Switch 2 version. Since it’s also available on PlayStation 4, this isn’t quite the miracle port it first seems but it’s still hugely impressive. To a casual observer it looks almost identical to the PlayStation 5 version and while careful comparison shows it has less effects and the resolution is clearly being upscaled, the important thing is that multiplayer matches are all 60fps. The main advantage of the Switch 2 version, if you casually ignore anyone who has played on a PC this century, is mouse controls.
This doesn’t make Avowed bad—I loved it—but it’s symptomatic of one area where it falls short compared to its contemporaries, not to mention the first-person Bethesda games it’s clearly modelled on. I can’t attack anyone at will and suffer the consequences (though the narrative stages ample opportunities for me to kill or have mercy). Likewise, while stealth is an option, it’s usually just a means to get an upper hand on a particular foe. Once I’ve attacked—whether from cover or using an invisibility spell—every baddie in the vicinity knows I’m there. But while this is a very good game, with time I came to understand that its ambitions are a touch more humble than some recent genre heavyweights. I realised that it might be more flattering to think of Avowed as a choice-based narrative-driven action game.

And then there’s sentient lighthouse simulator Keeper, Double Fine’s long-awaited return, but its debut trailer seemed to keep at least a few cards close to its chest. Original Jan asks his alters the same set of control questions each time they emerge from the Womb, moving through clockwork beats of dismay and outrage as the new arrivals grapple with the baffling nature of their existence. Indeed, as the hours accrue, the conversations naturally take on a kind of eerie, echoey feel, such is the way that Jan is, in essence, talking to himself. The result is a kind of maddeningly claustrophobic nightmare — and perhaps not wholly in the way 11 Bit necessarily intended.

Blades of Fire stands out with its engaging combat system and weapon customization. Unfortunately, the game can be irritating and even boring at times, which makes it just average. To a T dares to answer that question in one of the most absurd yet profound gaming experiences I’ve had in a long time. Gentle Giant’s debut title Spiritfall has just come to consoles, and it’s certainly worth playing this fast-paced roguelike with a unique hook.

I never felt constrained as the GM by Fear, knowing that I could save up a stack to make the final combat more epic. For those groups who want a little more guidance, there are a handful of campaign frames as examples of settings where Daggerheart shines. There are a few fantasy ones but the genres also dip into technomagical science fiction and weird westerns. They also contain some rules that groups can use for their original worlds, such as cooking monsters, crafting weapons and gear and adding firearms into the mix. Here, external walls and flooring all snap together nicely, while the inside of your home requires a bit more finicky work to get things to fit just right. If you do run into problems, the system itself is quite forgiving, and it’s easy enough to modify your floor plan to fit more appliances if things get a little tight.
This is a strange feature, because the game isn’t available on Switch 1, but Donkey Kong Bananza seems to have the same option. As you might expect, the Switch 1 version doesn’t run nearly as well as on the Switch 2, but it is playable, and this is presumably going to become a relatively common feature for Switch 2 games.
